PURPOSE

To record personal and medical information of patients admitted to public and private hospitals in Western Australia for planning, allocating and evaluating health services.

DESCRIPTION

The WA Hospital Morbidity Data System (HMDS) is comprised of over 21,000,000 electronic in-patient records dating back to 1970. The data includes demographic and administrative information, in addition to the patient diagnosis, procedures performed and external causes of injury and poisoning are available.

There is no formal definition of family and domestic violence used in this collection. Aspects of family and domestic violence captured by the data are:

COLLECTION METHODOLOGY

Western Australian hospitals collect and record in-patient activity according to standard protocols. They are required to maintain up to date and accurate patient case notes which include information relating to the minimum dataset items as described above. .

SCOPE / TARGET POPULATION

Victims (any age and gender) of assaults who are admitted to hospital.

COVERAGE

The HMDS contains data relating to admitted patients in all Western Australian public and private acute hospitals, public and private psychiatric hospitals and private free-standing day hospital facilities.

DATA AVAILABILITY / DISSEMINATION

Access to data may be available upon request on a case by case basis.
